Lady Lucy at UCA Farnham Fine Art This Week!

UCA Farnham Fine Art welcomed artist Lady Lucy and also saw the return of painter Matthew Weir.

Lady Lucy's practice encompasses socially engaged approaches to painting and drawing. 

Lady Lucy, who studied her Foundation Diploma in Fine Art at UCA at the start of her practice has an up coming group show at ATP Gallery, South London. 

Recent projects exploring creative exchange where shown at the Whitechapel Gallery and the Southbank Festival, London.

UCA Farnham Fine Art Student Success - Gina-Maria McCarthy

UCA Farnham Fine Art student, Gina-Maria McCarthy who graduated last year, had her first solo exhibition in Durham City presenting her new work "Folicle" through the end of March and into early April. This is her 8th exhibition and 2nd since graduating.

Richard Wentworth at UCA Farnham Fine Art, Thursday 23rd January

"Richard Wentworth has played a leading role in New British Sculpture since the end of the 1970s. His work, encircling the notion of objects and their use as part of our day-to-day experiences, has altered the traditional definition of sculpture as well as photography. By transforming and manipulating industrial and/or found objects into works of art, Wentworth subverts their original function and extends our understanding of them by breaking the conventional system of classification. The sculptural arrangements play with the notion of ready-made and juxtaposition of objects that bear no relation to each other.  Whereas in photography, as in the ongoing series Making Do and Getting By,Wentworth documents the everyday, paying attention to objects, occasional and involuntary geometries as well as uncanny situations that often go unnoticed.

Lee Maelzer at UCA Farnham Fine Art

We are very pleased to announce that artist Lee Maelzer will be visiting UCA Farnham next week on Wednesday 15th January as a visiting artist to talk about her practice to students on the Fine Art and Arts & Media courses.

Lee Maelzer is a Canadian artist her paintings deal with quiet reflections on isolation and fragmentation within communities. From a series of landscapes; dark menacing paintings of trailer parks and dimly lit interiors in Canada to interiors of alternative dwellings and habitation in London. Her work has a maturity, and a painterliness evocative of Vuillard but with a quality and relevancy of contemporary living, which comes from her experience of a hand to mouth existence in London over the years. Her new work embodies all of these aspects.

Matthew Bennington at UCA today!

Artist Matthew Bennington visited UCA Farnham today to present his work that encompasses print and film. He also provided support to year 1 students with the development of their project work.

"For me art has to be about art. I’m fully aware that not all artists are like me – I respect that, and I definitely don’t think my taste in art is superior. I’m cool with art that’s about other concepts, but for some reason, I never manage to relate to art that is about a foreign subject such as the ‘Vietnam War’, ‘the artist’s childhood’ or ‘the artist’s broken heart’, as much as art that is about a more broad subject like visual perception, life, death, or art itself. For me, I want everything a work of art has to say to be obtainable from the artwork itself – I don’t like it when I have to know the back story to appreciate the artwork.

That said, there are artworks that have a strong narration behind them – which I find interesting before I know the narration, and if there is a narration, I can’t resist not getting to know it."
