Graham Hudson & Jamie Shovlin Artists at UCA Farnham Fine Art This Week!

This week to complement the visiting artists Sigrid Holmwood and Mathew Weir whose work focuses on painting, the artists Graham Hudson and Jamie Shovlin have been at UCA Farnham Fine Art to support students. Their practices explore expanded notions of sculpture and post media fine art practice that encompass, installation, moving image, drawing and performative elements.

Stage 1 FIRST DAY INDUCTION PROJECT

MONUMENT

"The term monumentality suggests qualities of inertness, opacity, permanence, remoteness, distance, preciosity, and grandeur. Yet monuments are prized precisely because they are not merely cold, hard, and permanent. They are also living vital, immediate, and accessible, as least to some parts of society."

3 Hour Project!

On the very first day at University for the Creative Arts students studying on BA (Hons) Fine Art & BA (Hons) Arts & Media worked collaboratively to on an intense project over 3 hours.

From research to exhibition, students explored ideas around the "Monument" on this their momentous 1st day at UCA Farnham.

Inaugural Lecture

Students started the day with Amanda Couch's inaugural lecture on a range of artists who explore the monument in their work including the work of Mark Wallinger, Graham Hudson, Lottie Child and Doris Salcedo.

Tate Shots Interview

Project Development

Students spent some time to reflect on what the project and develop their own responses before then sharing these with each other and then formulating their own project groups.

Students then developed their ideas before starting to realise and construct their Monuments.

Exhibition

Students then exhibited their Monuments in the Quad that explored a range of approaches from intervention, protest, performance and participation.

CASE

Students spent some time reflecting upon their process to write an explanation or manifesto for their response to the project and the production of their Monument that where presented in CASE outside in the Quad.
