Louisa Chambers - UCA Farnham Graduate Solo Exhibition

Louisa Chambers graduated from UCA Farnham BA (Hons) Fine Art and progressed to the Royal College of Art to study an MA in Painting. Her success continues with her current solo show.

Stereoscope

For the next exhibition at Mrs Ricks Cupboard, Louisa Chambers envisages the space functioning as an optical device similar to a stereoscope. A stereoscope is a device for viewing two separate images that have been taken from slight different viewpoint corresponding to the spacing of they eyes
Chambers’ approach to painting is not absurd for absurdity’s sake, nor colour-driven as uncompromisingly as high geometric abstraction, nor as earnest and slavishly representational as traditional figuration. The subjects, methods and resolving of her paintings all carry through a very idiosyncratic vision; hard to define, but easy to intuit once presented with them in the flesh, dodging between easy categorisations through their playful search for a truth beneath the obvious surfaces of things.
Chambers’ sensitive application of paint, the colour relationships developed across the surfaces, and the dissemination of forms into simpler repetitive shapes are all considerations which are more commonly discussed in relation to abstract painting. But you can’t simply box Chambers’ paintings into just being abstract, instead they would benefit from a lexicon which includes discussion of her abstraction of the subject matter, and the abstract painterly concerns within her method
Mrs Ricks Cupboard is open every Friday 11 – 2pm
Private View will be Thursday 24th October 6 -9pm
