Lilah Fowler Artist Talk at UCA Farnham

\

Next Monday 4th November, artist Lilah Fowler will be visiting UCA Farnham to speak about her practice to coincide with her current show "Passage and Pair" at Maria Stenfors Gallery, London. Lilah will also be supporting Fine Art student's practice after her talk.

"Lilah Fowler, a 2008 graduate from Royal College of Art, came to the Maria Stenfors gallery in Wren Street and assessed the space. The building’s architectural plans were retrieved from a dusty box, measurements were taken and the history of not only the building but also the surrounding area was investigated. This was before the show was even confirmed.

This process is not unusual for Fowler, who works on an architectural level to integrate the building and its surroundings into her work and, thus, ties every exhibit to its location. Were the exhibit to be transferred to another gallery, it would have to be deconstructed and rearranged to reflect the individual character of that space, together with its history and surroundings. With all this in mind, it doesn’t sound too pretentious to say that this really is a unique never-seen- before never-will-see-again exhibition.

What does sound a bit strange is that Fowler took inspiration from both Camden, the gallery’s borough, and California, where she recently visited. A few minutes in the gallery will, however, reveal this to be surprisingly self-evident: the spaces portrayed through the images and installations are open, wide and empty, reminiscent of the Californian desert."

Louisa Chambers - UCA Farnham Graduate Solo Exhibition

Louisa Chambers graduated from UCA Farnham BA (Hons) Fine Art and progressed to the Royal College of Art to study an MA in Painting. Her success continues with her current solo show.

Stereoscope

For the next exhibition at Mrs Ricks Cupboard, Louisa Chambers envisages the space functioning as an optical device similar to a stereoscope. A stereoscope is a device for viewing two separate images that have been taken from slight different viewpoint corresponding to the spacing of they eyes
Chambers’ approach to painting is not absurd for absurdity’s sake, nor colour-driven as uncompromisingly as high geometric abstraction, nor as earnest and slavishly representational as traditional figuration. The subjects, methods and resolving of her paintings all carry through a very idiosyncratic vision; hard to define, but easy to intuit once presented with them in the flesh, dodging between easy categorisations through their playful search for a truth beneath the obvious surfaces of things.
Chambers’ sensitive application of paint, the colour relationships developed across the surfaces, and the dissemination of forms into simpler repetitive shapes are all considerations which are more commonly discussed in relation to abstract painting. But you can’t simply box Chambers’ paintings into just being abstract, instead they would benefit from a lexicon which includes discussion of her abstraction of the subject matter, and the abstract painterly concerns within her method
Mrs Ricks Cupboard is open every Friday 11 – 2pm
Private View will be Thursday 24th October 6 -9pm

Andrea Gregson at the Foundry Fellowship Seminar

CHELSEA FOUNDRY FELLOWSHIP
SEMINAR  2013
 Wednesday 30th October 2013
3.00pm in the Green Room at Chelsea College of Art & Design

You are invited to see presentations by four more Foundry Fellows who have been working at different periods in the foundry at Chelsea College of Art & Design from 2011 until 2013.
These are the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth Fellows at this year’s seminar:  Andrea Gregson, Natuka Honrubia, Barbara Tong and Ian Middleton.
As well as the four individual presentations, there will also be a discussion by the Fellows about their thoughts and reflections on their time and experience while working in the foundry.
The Foundry Fellowship is a programme where we periodically invite an artist to work in the Chelsea College of Art Foundry in order to develop their practice through an agreed project involving the processes of Fine Art Bronze Casting.
Whilst the prime aim of the fellowship is to support the Fellow in their individual work, we expect through their presence working alongside students and staff in the foundry, to open up discourse and debate about making, collaboration and the broader scope of creative practice. (Previous Fellows include; Prof. Paul Coldwell, Bruce Gernand, Robson Cezar, Sam Burford, Marco Chiandetti and Richard Slatter).
This is an opportunity to see the scope of work that has been produced during these fellowships, and for people to ask questions and give their views about this programme.
All Welcome.

Please RSVP to:    j.nicoll@chelsea.arts.ac.uk
