Gustav Metzger at UCA Farnham - MASS MEDIA: Today & Tomorrow Exhibition Opening

Gustav Metzger's work "Mass Media: Today & Yesterday" opened in the James Hockey Gallery at UCA Farnham yesterday. The work is part of a larger ongoing collaboration between Gustav Metzger and Fine Art at UCA Farnham, that will encompass a conference MASS EXTINCTION, in June 2014. Keynote speakers from across the arts, humanities and sciences will address a range of issues and actions relating to sustainability and the urgency of creative thinking and action needed to address global social, environmental and political issues.

The work Mass Media: Today & Yesterday is a relational piece of work that required the participation of students at UCA Farnham and the local community to construct. The sculptural work is made up of newspapers that will continue to grow with further donations, and it asks the viewer to participate by taking a closer look at the news and global events. The viewer is able to select significant headlines and text to draw attention to the issues they deem to be important, whilst also highlighting the constructed nature of mass media information and how it is consumed. The sculptural work is in a constant state of flux as it is continually replenished and deconstructed.
